St. Raymond of Penafort was born in Spain as a relative of the King of Aragon. As a young child, he developed a special love for the Holy Virgin. After his studies, he became a teacher and later entered the Order of the Dominicans. He is said to have been very humble, holy, and that he converted many. Together with James of Aragon and St. Peter Nolasco founded the Order of Our Lady of Ransom, which tried to save Christians captured by the Moors. According to a legend, Raymond sailed all the way from Majorca to Barcelona on a cloak spread upon the water and died at the age of 100.
