Patroness of mothers, expectant mothers, ranchers, butchers and Carthage
Shown as a martyr with cow-head and martyr's lily.
Saint Perpetua was a 22 year old woman of a noble family. She was arrested with her slave Felicitas, who was pregnant and preparing for her baptism. She was baptised against her father's will in prison. Emperor Septimus Severus ordered that they be thrown in the amphitheater to be eaten by beasts. Because those spared her, a gladiator was charged with her killing. As the gladiator was unable to bring himself to kill her, Perpetua herself guided the sword to her throat. She died at the age of 22 leaving behind an infant son.
