Biography of St. Ethelbert of Kent:

Ethelbert was king of Kent (England) from 558 until his death in 616, who was converted by St. Augustine and baptized in 597. During his reign, he converted a large part of his population to Christianity. He even brought the king of the East Saxons and the king of the East Angles into the church. His wife was an important figure: she was the Christian daughter of King Charibert of Paris. Furthermore, St. Ethelbert founded the abbeys of Christ Church in Canterbury and St. Andrew's in Rochester and wrote wise state-laws. Ethelbert was the first English king who converted to Christianity. He died in 616 and was succeeded by his pagan son Eadbald.
