Biography:
James was born as the son of Zebedee and Salome and his brother was John the Apostle. He was one of the first disciples who joined Jesus. According to the bible, James witnessed Jesus desperation in the garden of Getsemani before his crucifixion and was the first apostle to be martyred. He was executed with a sword during the reign of Herodes Agrippa I. Numerous legends about James the Greater are known nowadays, especially in Spain. There, the Way of St. James has became a very famous pilgrimage route that ends in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela where his remains are buried.
Patronage: St. James the Greater is patron saint of the laborers and of Spain, of pharmacists, of warriors, hat-makers, pilgrims and for apples and good weather.
