During a pilgrimage to Rome, he devoted himself to caring for plague victims, reportedly performing many miraculous healings. Eventually, he contracted the disease himself and withdrew into solitude, where, according to tradition, a dog brought him bread daily until he recovered. Upon returning to Montpellier, he was mistakenly imprisoned as a spy and died after several years in captivity.
