Feastday of St. Adrian of Canterbury: 7th of December (and 4th of April)

When did he live: In the Seventh and Eight century

Biography of St. Adrian:
Adrian was serving as an abbot in Naples, Italy when the Pope wanted him to be the new Archbishop of Canterbury. He refused and suggested Teodoro of Tarso for this position. The Pope accepted, under the condition that he would help him as a councillor, so he was appointed as abbot of the monastery of St. Peter and Paul in Canterbury. Thanks to his leadership skills, the institute evolved to one of the most important centers of education. Adrian taught at the school for 40 years. He died in Canterbury, probably in the year 710, and was buried in the monastery. Several hundred years later, during reconstructions, Adrian's body was found in an undamaged state. As word spread, people visited his tomb, which became famous for miracles.

Wooden statues and sculptures of St. Adrian of Canterbury made in Val Gardena: The statue above shows St.Adrian wearing his religious gown, with a cross around his neck and holding books and the crook.
