Alphonsus Maria de Liguori was born in 1696 near Naples, Italy. His parents provided him with an exceptional education after which he entered the priesthood in 1726. He was especially interested in caring for the poor in Naples. In 1732, he decided to dedicate his life to the poor and most abandoned. He found others who were called as he was, and adopted a style of ministry to "mission among the people" - and so began the Congregation of the Redemptorists. Later on, he was ordered bishop of Sant'Agata and passed away in 1787.
