Benignus was a pupil of Polykarp, the bishop of Smyrna, and was sent to Gaul to preach the Gospel. He performed many miracles and converted many people. He was denounced to the Emperor Aurelian who ordered that he be tortured. Because the dogs that were supposed to eat him did not even touch him, soldiers clubbed him to death with a bar of iron and his heart was pierced. After his death, he was buried by Leonille, a Christian lady.
