St Catherine was the youngest of 5 children in a family of Genoese nobles. She tried to enter a convent but was rejected because she was too young. When she was 16 she was forced into an arranged marriage and she soon fell into a state of depression. It was said that she had a vision one night and was changed for the better. She helped her husband with his faith and cared for the sick and poor.She became a Franciscan Tertiary in 1490.
