Biography of St. Ferdinand:
Ferdinand was born near Salamanca as the son of King Alfonso IX and his wife Berengaria. At the young age of eighteen, he was made king of Castile and his mother advised him. Ferdinand married Beatrice, the daughter of Philip King of Germany, and had ten children with her. In 1225, he successfully held back islamic invaders. During his reign, he founded several hospitals, churches, monasteries and conquered Seville and Cordoba. Ferdinand died in 1252 due to a prolonged illness.
