Biography of St. Gertrude:
Saint Gertrude the Great or Saint Gertrude of Helfta was born at Eisleben in Thuringia. Probably she was an orphan and at the age of five she was placed in the care of the Benedictine nuns of Helfta. Later she became a nun in the same convent and was elected abbess in 1251. She dedicated her life to her studies, she learned Latin and became an expert in philosophy and literature. Her great mental activity induced her to produce numerous writings. Gertrude died at Helfta around 1302.
