BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Januarius of Naples was bishop of Benevento and was martyred around 305 AD during the Christian persecutions under Emperor Diocletian. According to tradition, he was imprisoned with some companions and eventually beheaded. After his death, his blood was collected in two vials, now preserved in the Naples Cathedral. This blood miraculously liquefies several times a year, particularly on September 19th, his feast day. This phenomenon, known as the "miracle of the blood of Saint Januarius," is considered a sign of divine protection for the city of Naples and is the object of great popular veneration.

Saint Januarius is the patron saint of Naples and volcanoes, and is invoked against natural disasters.
