Conrad was born in 1234 in Ascoli (Italy) to a noble family. Together with his friend, Girolamo d'Ascoli, he entered the Order of Friars Minor at Ascoli. After his studies, Conrad was sent to Rome to teach theology and his friend became Pope under the title Nicholas IV. With the permission to go to Africa, Conrad preached in Libya and worked several miracles. He was recalled in 1278 to serve as a mediator in the conflict between France and Aragon. When did Saint Roch live: 14th century AD

BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Roch was born around 1295 in Montpellier, France, into a wealthy family. After his parents' death, he distributed his inheritance to the poor and embraced an ascetic life. During a pilgrimage to Rome, he devoted himself to caring for plague victims, reportedly performing many miraculous healings. Eventually, he contracted the disease himself and withdrew into solitude, where, according to tradition, a dog brought him bread daily until he recovered. Upon returning to Montpellier, he was mistakenly imprisoned as a spy and died after several years in captivity.

PATRONAGE:
St. Roch is the patron saint of plague victims, nurses, pharmacists, surgeons, pilgrims, and domestic animals.

SYMBOLISM, DEPICTION:
The symbols of San Roch are the plague sore on his leg, representing both his suffering and healing power and the pilgrim's staff symbolizing his spiritual journey.
