When did Saint Elisabeth live: 1207 - 1231
BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Elisabeth was the daughter of the Hungarian King Andrew II and was brought to the Thuringian court as a child to marry Louis IV for reasons of power politics. However, their marriage was very unusual for the time, as they had a deep affection and respect for each other. Together they also founded a hospital in Gotha to help the poor and sick. After the Fifth Crusade in 1227, Louis perished, and Elisabeth dedicated her life to a radical form of charity. She spent the rest of her life in poverty, which led to great tensions with her family and the nobility. She and her children sought refuge with relatives and lost their lives in 1231. Legend has it that she once secretly brought loaves of bread in a cloth to the poor. However, as soon as someone looked under the cloth, the loaves turned into roses.
PATRONAGE:
St. Elisabeth is the patron saint of Caritas, the Teutonic Order; of bakers, widows, orphans, the persecuted, beggars, the sick and the needy.
SYMBOLISM:
The symbols of San Elisabeth are a jug as a sign of feeding the sick, a cloth alluding to the legend and a rope to represent self-mortification.
