Patron Saint of Alsace, of Arlesheim in Switzerland, the blind, the winemaker, for eye, ear and head sufferings
Imagery and Representation: shown with a plate on which lie her eyes and a book
Odilia was born to a noble family of Alsace. She was born blind. Since she was blind and a female, her father did not want her. So, her mother sent her to a town in Burgundy where she was raised by farmers and later moved into a monastery where she was baptized. After she was baptized, she miraculously regained her sight. She returned home after this. Her father accidentally killed her brother when he was trying to kill her. Even though he tried to murder her, when her father became ill, she took great care of him.
He then finally gave up on trying to murder her and founded the Augustine monastic community. Odilia herself founded a monastery in Nierdermünster.
