When did St.Oswald live: in the Seventh Century
Biography of St. Oswald:
Oswald was born in 604 as the son of Ethelfrith, king of Northumbria, and spent a period in exile in Scotland where he converted to Christianity. After the fall of Edwin, his uncle, and later the fall of his brother, he returned to Northumbria defeating the British king Cadwalla in a battle. It is said, that before the battle, Oswald ordered to arise a wooden cross and gathered his soldiers for a prayer for victory. After the successful battle, he called a bishop and asked him to preach the gospel in Northumbria. Due to the king's positive influence, many converted to Christianity and many churches and cathedrals where built. Unfortunately, Oswald's reign only lasted for eight years because he was killed in the Battle of Maserfield. His last act was to pray for the soldiers who were dying with him on the battlefield.
