Patron Saint of female educational establishments, of the city of Cologne, she is invoked to get an acceptable death
Imagery and Representation: shown with an arrow in her hand, a crown and a palm.
The only proved fact about the life of St. Ursula is the building of a basilica in Cologne to honour the death of a group of virgins who had been martyred. One of those virgins was St. Ursula. According to the legend, the son of the king of England was fascinated by the beauty of St. Ursula, a young Christian, and asked her to marry him. She agreed on condition that he should convert to Christianity. Before marrying him she made a pilgrimage to Rome together with ten other virgins. During the voyage an angel appeared to St. Ursula and told her to go to Cologne where she should get the crown of the martyrdom. The Huns had occupied Cologne and as they saw the virgins arriving, they killed them all. After trying to seduce St. Ursula, without result, the leader of the Huns lanced her beautiful body with an arrow.
