Represented with a book and a feather in her hands.
Saint Verena was born in Egypt. She is known to be a virgin. She was baptised and joined the Christian Theban Legion headed by her relative Saint Maurice. Her fiance took part in this legion also. She moved to Italy to follow the Legion. She stayed in Italy when the rest of the legion went to Switzerland. When she found out that most of the legion was martyred near Agauno, she went there to venerate them.
But the population of Agauno didn't accomodate Saint Verena and so she decided to leed the life of a hermit. The women of the locality began to visit her and to ask her for some advice or help and St. Verena told them about Jesus and the faith. A community of women gathered around her, but Verena escaped and went to Zurzach. There she helped the poor and cured the sick, especially those suffering of leprosy. Till this day St. Verena is loved, venerated and known as one of the most famous saints in Switzerland.
